Nobody Has Won AI Search in Your Town. Yet.

We measured four local markets. The leader in each one is named in less than half of AI answers.

Ask anyone who's tried to crack Google's local rankings: the map pack is three slots, the same businesses have held them for years, and dislodging them costs a fortune.

We measured what the same picture looks like in AI answers. It doesn't look like that at all.

MarketBusinesses AI namesTop 5 holdLeader's rate
Dentists, mid-size metro23612%41%
Plumbing & HVAC, mid-size metro21711%36%
Plumbing & HVAC, metro of 2M+3647%34%
Dentists, metro of 2M+5574%28%

Read that third column again. In a metro of over two million people, the five most-recommended dentists combined account for 4% of all AI mentions. Five hundred fifty-seven different practices got named at least once.

There is no incumbent. The seats aren't taken. Most businesses don't know the game started.

Why it's wide open

AI answers are assembled fresh, per question, from whatever documents the platform finds. There's no accumulated rank to defend, no ten-year-old domain authority wall. A practice with the right page, on the right sources, can show up next month.

That cuts both ways. Nothing is locked, which means nothing is safe either.

And the pool of winners is tiny: an index of more than 350,000 business locations found ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of local businesses at all (SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026). The other 98.8% are competing for seats nobody has claimed.

The window

AI-referred traffic to business websites grew 393% in the year to Q1 2026 (Adobe Analytics), and people who adopt an AI assistant cut their traditional searching by more than 20% within about five months (London Business School / UCLA). Google's local rankings took roughly a decade to harden into the fortress they are now.

These rankings will harden too. The businesses that learn what the platforms read, while the leader in their market is still under 50%, are the ones the fortress will eventually belong to.

The land is cheap exactly once.

Based on Kensume's measurement of four metro/category markets and the AI answers, June to August 2026.
