The Best-Reviewed Dentist in Town Is Invisible to AI

701 five-star reviews. #1 in the Google local pack. Named in 11% of ChatGPT answers.

There's a dental practice that has done everything right. Over 700 reviews, nearly all five stars. First position in Google's local pack. The practice every hygienist in town would recommend.

We asked the five big AI platforms the questions that practice's customers ask (“who's the best dentist near me,” “which dentist takes my insurance”) many times each, and counted how often it came up.

ChatGPT named it in 11% of answers. On two platforms it never appeared at all.

Meanwhile a competitor across town was named in over 80% of answers on one platform.

It gets stranger

We found a heating and air company that ranks #1 on Google in its market, the business Google itself considers the answer. Its AI visibility: 1.3%.

Twenty years of reputation, invisible on a channel whose referred traffic to business websites grew 393% in a single year (Adobe Analytics, Q1 2026). This isn't coming. It came.

Why reputation doesn't carry over

AI platforms don't read your reputation. They read documents: your website, and each platform's own preferred set of directories, review sites and forums. If the documents don't say what you're good at, the AI doesn't know, no matter what your patients think.

It gets stranger still. Independent research on Google's AI answers found that when a business's own page was cited as a source, the recommendation still went to a competitor 69% of the time (224 of 323 cited cases; Lily Ray, June 2026). Being read by AI tools and being recommended by them are different things, which is why we measure how often you're named, not just whether your site got crawled.

The practice above scores well on exactly three types of question, and it has exactly three pages on its website matching them. The questions it loses? No page. That's not a coincidence. That's the mechanism.

The uncomfortable question

When did you last check what AI says when someone asks about your industry in your town? Not your rating. Not your ranking. What the AI actually says.

Most owners have never once looked. The ones who look first are going to take slots that, on current evidence, nobody is defending.
